The Soul of Communication

The excerpt mentions “critical thinking equips leaders and managers to think rationally, provide sound reasoning and develop a coherent argument.”. I strongly agree with this statement. As an engineer, it is even more important to have the ability to think critically as that's what engineering is. We are tasked to tackle problems and come up with creative solutions.

Since we are already applying critical thinking for work why not integrate it into our communication too. Communication is going to be challenging in the civil engineering industry as we are working in a very diverse environment. We can apply critical reflection to ensure that all parties involved are equally understood. As a future leader in the industry, I feel that being able to convey messages across all stakeholders would be crucial in boosting the efficiency of our work done. This would lead to lesser hours worked and overall a healthier work-life balance.

In Singapore, the construction industry revolves around a 5½ day work week. This shows a lack of efficiency in completing projects. With a newer batch of engineers equipped with critical thinking and communication skills. I hope to see a future where the civil industry turns more efficient.
